Dulse, 2024

‘Dulse’ is a short film that delves into themes of insecurity and self. Set at a party in West London, Morgan, an outsider invited by a fleeting acquaintance, quietly navigates a series of interactions as he tries to discern irony in the seriousness around him.

Amid the tension between conformity and originality, the film subtly explores the struggle for authentic self-expression within the artistic community, blending naturalism and absurdism to offer a poignant reflection on modern identity.

I worked closely with the director of the story to create custom titles and develop a consistent visual direction for promoting the film.

Visual Tension

While drawing the typography for the titles, I aimed to achieve a level of visual tension through a contrast between straight lines, elegant curves, and sharp endpoints.

Some of my inspiration stems from looking at street signs around London, which are set in Albertus, a glyphic serif display typeface designed by Berthold Wolpe in the period 1932 to 1940.
